Former council worker investigated for fraud

A former Birmingham City Council worker is being investigated for alleged fraud after her arrest last year.

West Midlands Police arrested a 50-year-old woman from the city on suspicion of fraud in May 2017. She has since been released pending an investigation.

The BBC reports that the ongoing inquiry was revealed in the council’s latest audit risk assessment, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

According to the report, there has been a ‘major overhaul of the systems and processes within that service area’ since the alleged ‘theft of monies’.

The council said it is unable to give any more information on the case, but that it has taken a number of steps since the alleged incident, and has confirmed that the officer no longer works for the council.

It said it has conducted a review of procedures following the alleged crimes, looking at payment methods, access controls, segregation of duties and management oversight.
