Agencies respond to aftermath of floods

Flooding in Birmingham

Sparkhill and Selly Park residents are being offered the chance to meet the Environment Agency, Birmingham City Council and the National Flood Forum following recent flooding in the area.

The aim is to offer support to local residents and businesses who were affected by the floods, and to seek a solution for the future, by examining the causes of recent flooding, and thereby reducing future flood risk.

Extreme flash flooding caused chaos in the area, and some homes may be unfit for habitation for up to one year.

Emma Smailes, from the Environment Agency said: “Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the recent flooding. We are continuing to work in the communities affected and our teams are working round the clock to monitor flood risk, issue flood alerts and warnings and keep waterways clear of debris.”

A series of drop-in events are being held from 6 June – 12 June to give local people the opportunity to speak to the teams involved in local flood management.

Smailes added: “We want to meet local people so they can share their experience with us, ask us questions and so that we can work together to investigate what happened and identify ways of reducing flood risk in the future.”

The events in Selly Park are on June 6 and 7, while Sparkhill residents will get their chance to talk to the experts on June 11 and 12.
