Truck specialist drives ahead with Ocado deal

West Bromwich-based Guest Truck and Van is set to supply online supermarket Ocado with 29 gas-powered IVECO Stralis NP tractor units, which it says is the largest order for compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks of any manufacturer in the UK.

Robert Spittle, managing director of Guest Truck and Van said: “Ocado is working to become the UK’s most environmentally-friendly supermarket and the green credentials of these vehicles are clear.

“Fleet managers are reviewing the fuel costs against their existing diesel fleets and recognising the cost benefits of running these cleaner, quieter vehicles. We’re very pleased that Ocado has chosen IVECO and Guest.

“CNG fueling infrastructure is still in its early stages in the UK, but with operations like Ocado leading the way, it should be given a boost, making the choice of CNG more realistic for other fleets and smaller operators.”

Stuart Skingsley of Ocado, said: “We were immediately attracted to the Stralis NP when it was launched as it appeared to be the step change in technology that would drive gas-powered trucks to a new place in the market. The demonstrator vehicle received positive feedback from our drivers, and our own experience driving the vehicle was also positive.”

Ocado has opted for a full repair and maintenance package with Guest Truck and Van throughout the five-year lease period, which will see all servicing work take place within the dealer network.
