A successful family run business which has won recognition for putting employee well being at the top of its agenda

Stepnell, the Rugby based construction business, has been voted as one of the Top 10 best companies to work for in the Construction Week – Construction Enquirer Awards. The award was made by Stepnell’s peers, who placed Stepnell in the top category as a Best Main Contractor to Work With Award for those construction firms with a turnover of under £250m.

Tom Wakeford, Stepnell’s joint managing director said:”We are delighted to be sen in our industry as a Top 10 construction employer. Our people are at the centre of every company decision we make and it is great to see that this has been recognised.”

“One of the key themes we have been hearing from our employees is that they like working for Stepnell because they feel we are still a family run business with a family atmosphere; where everyone feels part of the team, listened to, consulted and empowered to make decisions and changes.”

As part of their proven commitment to employee well being, Stepnell has invested in a programme called Average2Awesome (A2A) which is a professionally coached health and fitness programme, rooted in the idea that a healthy workforce is happier and also more productive. In the course of A2A all staff were challenged to undergo a 12 week low calorie diet and exercise programme to get fit and healthy, which has resulted in many Stepnell staff now going for pre-work runs and lunchtime walks.

Wakeford added:”As part of our commitment to looking after our employees , Stepnell runs a range of development programmes to help people across the business move forward in their careers, and we routinely run ‘listening groups’ to gain feedback and find out what they would like to see improved.”

Stepnell was founded over 150 years ago, and now employs 430 people, turning over £146m.
