‘Top 10’ Neapolitan pizzeria moves into Birmingham

A new pizzeria is set to open on Bennett’s Hill, the former site of Spanish restaurant Amantia.

Neapolitan restaurant Rudy’s Pizza is opening at the site, having first launched in Ancoats in Manchester in 2015. It will create 30 jobs in total.

The new Birmingham site will be Rudy’s fourth and it will have an 85-cover restaurant for walk-ins only.

It will have handmade wood-fired ovens shipped from Naples, and Rudy’s chefs use traditional flour and San Marzano tomatoes from the fields next to Mount Vesuvius, though the restaurant owners say they will also use locally sourced ingredients.

The Guardian named Rudy’s Pizza Manchester in the top 10 pizzeria’s outside London.

Rudy’s Pizzeria currently operates sites in Manchester Ancoats, Manchester Peter Street, and Liverpool.

Amantia, the restaurant at the former site, was closed by its owners last month. Andrea Tragaj, his wife Marta Retenaga and her sister Silvia who owned the popular Spanish restaurant said they wanted to spend more time with their families and on other projects.

In an upbeat message announcing their departure from the site they added: “We are already working on a new exciting (but slightly different) venture that we will share with you very soon.”
