Multimillion-pound plans for conversion of city centre offices into hotel revealed

Proposals for a major investment into an office building in Birmingham have been submitted which would see the construction of a new boutique hotel in the heart of the city.

The development would see the former office floors of King Edward House on New Street repurposed to make way for a 259-bedroom hotel.

A planning application has been submitted by M&G Real Estate, the building’s landlord, which has earmarked the office space as ripe for conversion into a hotel, retaining retail premises on the ground floor.

M&G Real Estate said the development would create a range of new employment opportunities, both during the construction period and in the form of long-term jobs at the hotel itself.

Will Gerrish, retail development manager at M&G Real Estate said: “The redevelopment proposals for King Edward House represent a significant investment into a unique and historic city centre building, bringing it into full public use for the first time. Advanced discussions are underway with a boutique hotel operator seeking its first Birmingham presence and we look forward to being able to share more details about them and their ambitions for Birmingham in due course.

“We see real opportunity in repurposing this building to react to an undersupply of hotel accommodation in the city centre and to help support a thriving local economy. We now await with interest the decision of the council’s planning department.”
