Plans revealed for 186-bed student scheme in Selly Oak

How the scheme would look

Plans to turn an ex-servicemen’s club in Selly Oak into a 186-bed student scheme have been submitted to Birmingham City Council.

Madison Construction wants to turn the former club and its car park on Dawlish Road into a building that would range between three and five storeys in height. The proposals include rooms in a mixture of cluster and studio arrangements and also includes a large communal provision and ancillary accommodation.

The communal area would include study pods, a coffee shop, a games room, cinema room and a gym.

A planning statement accompanying the application reads: “The proposed development will add 186 purposebuilt bed spaces to the current potential total (existing built, permitted and proposed but not yet built schemes) of 11,261 units, increasing the total to 11,447 units. This will still leave circa 61% of the student population of Birmingham University not being able to access purpose-built accommodation, the need for additional student accommodation is therefore evident.”
