Former nightclub to be sold at auction

Burton-on-Trent’s former Refinery Night Club could be set for a new lease of life when it goes under the hammer at auction later this month.

Originally built as a church hall more than a century ago, the building housed a night spot in the late 1990s but has been closed for nearly two decades.

Plans to convert the site into shops, offices and apartments won the backing of local councillors a decade ago but ran out of steam.

It is now set to go under the hammer with a guide price of £135,000 at the upcoming Bond Wolfe auction at Villa Park on 27 February.

Colin Totney, land and development surveyor at Bond Wolfe Auctions, said: “This is an excellent mixed use redevelopment opportunity in the heart of Burton-on-Trent. Despite the fact that is has remained unused for so long this remains a distinctive building that could be revived as an attractive part of Burton’s town centre.

“Planning permission for a change of use project was granted by East Staffordshire Borough Council in March 2011 and in an email dated 14 March 2014 the Council confirmed that a material commencement had been made on the work.

“I am confident that, with such a competitive price tag, this property will be the focus of considerable competitive bidding on auction day.”
