New vision for park revealed

Newbold Comyn

A new vision for the future of Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa is a step closer to becoming a reality following the approval of a draft masterplan for the park.

The news comes after the the closure of the park’s golf course in December 2017, the Council has been working with residents, stakeholders and advisors the Sport, Leisure and Culture Consultancy (SLC), to map a future for the space.

The draft masterplan has been drawn up to reflect the results of the most recent survey carried out in September 2019, which asked residents and stakeholders which sport and physical activity facilities they would like to see at Newbold Comyn.

It shows a proposed mix of new facilities, which sees an extension to the nature reserve; a revised golf offer with adventure golf and pitch & putt; high ropes, outdoor climbing and zip wires; a new visitor centre and café with football pavilion; and a variety of cycle tracks across the former golf course.

Residents will now have the opportunity to give their feedback on the draft masterplan in an online consultation that will run from 30 March to 8 May. The survey will ask residents how often they would use the new facilities and whether they support their inclusion in the masterplan.

Councillor David Norris, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “The Council has rightly taken its time to study the future of Newbold Comyn, considering the local need for sport and physical activity facilities whilst also looking at how cost effective and sustainable these facilities are.

“The draft masterplan we feel best reflects this, and I would urge as many people as possible to take part in this survey as we finalise the future of Newbold Comyn, so we can ensure that we are providing facilities that will be used for generations to come.”
