Businesses urged to claim part of £12m virus support

Small businesses which have a rateable premises in Tamworth are being urged to get in touch and see if they are eligible for a share of a £12m coronavirus support package.

Tamworth Borough Council has received the pot of Government money to allocate to businesses in the town, but so far only around 450 of the 1,100 eligible local firms have submitted the relevant information.

Grants of £10,000 or £25,000 are available to a variety of businesses which have a rateable value of less than £51,000

Councillor Jeremy Oates, Tamworth Borough Council’s cabinet member for Heritage and Growth, said: “Our teams have been busy calling, emailing and writing to hundreds of businesses over the last week, but they’re now nearing the end of that list and only around 450 have filled in the online form which enables their eligibility and grant to be processed.

“The problem is because many business owners are working from home, it means business post is probably not being picked up, or details may be out of date, so we need to get the word out to businesses to check the criteria and if they think they’re eligible, fill out the form online.

“The forms we’ve had so far are now being processed – there are a number of eligibility and fraud checks to carry out – but we expect the first allocations of grants to be finalised today.

“This means grants of either £10,000 or £25,000 are on their way to dozens of businesses which I’m sure will go a long way towards helping them survive this massive economic challenge. I urge businesses to find out whether they could also benefit from this fund.”
