HSBC to shut 82 branches

HSBC is to shut 82 branches this year citing a shift towards telephone and internet banking.

The banking giant said it will “aim to redeploy all customer service colleagues who are impacted into suitable nearby locations”, but declined to say how many jobs would be affected.

The move will see the bank’s branch total reduced to 511.

The Midlands sites that will shut are:

In May: Wednesbury; Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks

In June: Belper, King Street; Wigston, Leicester Road

In July: Birmingham, Erdington

In September: Swadlincote, High Street; Worksop Bridge Street

HSBC said that 81 of the branches are within a mile of a Post Office, two thirds are within five miles of another HSBC branch and nine in 10 are within 10 miles.

Jackie Uhi, HSBC UK’s head of network, said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasised the need for the changes that we are making.

“It hasn’t pushed us in a different direction but reinforces the things that we were focusing on before and has crystallised our thinking.

“This is a strategic direction that we need to take to have a branch network fit for the future.”
