Repair works on collapsed river embankment that forced main road closure completes

Work to repair a collapsed river embankment which forced the partial closure of a main Wolverhampton road has been completed a week ahead of schedule.

The outbound carriageway of the A454 Bridgnorth Road in Wightwick reopened on Friday.

The outbound lane was closed from its junction with Windmill Lane on public safety grounds after a section of the Smestow Brook embankment, which runs next to the highway, collapsed earlier this month and exposed high voltage electricity cables.

Cllr Steve Evans of City of Wolverhampton Council said: “It’s excellent news that we have been able to get the outbound carriageway open far ahead of schedule.

“Wherever possible we want to avoid any disruption to residents using our roads and I’d like to thank everyone for their hard work in completing this project early.

“These works took us by surprise, but they were essential to ensure that the public were not put at risk should any more of the embankment give way.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience whilst the works were completed and apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
