Council bosses have been recommended to approve plans for the construction of almost 700 apartments on land around Birmingham’s HS2 station.

Homes England wants to develop up to 762 homes in five buildings of up to 15 storeys each on New Bond Street in the Bordesley area of the city.

The mixed-use scheme across the 1.6 hectare site will also include commercial space and public and private amenity facilities.

Within the development the application is also seeking to deliver a 35% level of affordable housing.

The application seeks consent for up to 2,289sq m of commercial floorspace.

Earlier this year, Birmingham City Council gave the green light to approve a deal which saw it buy the former Birmingham City University site at Perry Barr from Homes England to deliver the Athletes Village for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The deal also included Homes England buying up the authority’s site at New Bond Street in Digbeth.

Subject to planning permission the works are proposed to start in 2023 following a period of demolition and complete in 2027.

The application has been recommended for approval subject to a Section 106 Legal Agreement.
