Plans revealed to extend major city centre student apartments

How the revised building will look

Plans to extend a student accommodation block to provide a further 61 bedrooms have been revealed.

The move, by Capitol Students, will see combustible cladding removed from Londonderrt House on Newton Street, and a further three floors added to the building, taking it to eight storeys high, if the plans are passed by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee.

Capitol Students also want to carry out an iternal re-fit of the the existing student accommodation, including ground floor amenity space, including a gym and leisure space and alterations to the ground floor frontage.

Londonderry House sits on top of an NCP car park on the corner of Newton Street and Dale End.

A planning statement reads: “The major refurbishment programme planned for the existing student residences will offer enhanced, modern interiors of quality and with a variety of new amenity spaces providing greater opportunity for student interaction, activities and benefits to general wellbeing.

“Existing Cluster flats and Studios will be revamped to improve the student experience further, including new en-suite bathroom pods and interiors to bedrooms and kitchen, lounge, dining areas.”
