Plans to extend city centre student scheme given go-ahead
Plans to extend a student accommodation block to provide a further 61 bedrooms have been given the go-ahead by Birmingham City Council.
The news will mean that Capitol Students will remove combustible cladding from Londonderry House on Newton Street, and add a further three floors to the building, taking it to eight storeys high.
Capitol Students will also carry out an internal re-fit of the the existing student accommodation, including ground floor amenity space, including a gym and leisure space and alterations to the ground floor frontage.
Londonderry House sits on top of an NCP car park on the corner of Newton Street and Dale End.
A planning statement reads: “The major refurbishment programme planned for the existing student residences will offer enhanced, modern interiors of quality and with a variety of new amenity spaces providing greater opportunity for student interaction, activities and benefits to general wellbeing.
“Existing Cluster flats and Studios will be revamped to improve the student experience further, including new en-suite bathroom pods and interiors to bedrooms and kitchen, lounge, dining areas.”
