‘Embarrassed’ Tamworth MP forced to resign over groping allegations

Chris Pincher

The MP for Tamworth and the Government’s Deputy Chief Whip abruptly resigned last night (June 30) after allegedly groping two men while drunk.

Chris Pincher said he was “embarrassed” after a reported incident on Wednesday evening, which is alleged to have taken place at the Carlton Club in Piccadilly, London.

His resignation letter read: “Last night I drank far too much. I’ve embarrassed myself and other people which is the last thing I want to do and for that I apologise to you and to those concerned. I think the right thing to do in the circumstances is to resign as Deputy Chief Whip. I owe it to you and the people I’ve caused upset to, to do this.”

It is the second time that Pincher has been forced to resign from the Whips’ office. It 2017 he was accused of making a pass at former Olympic rower and Tory activist Alex Story. He was subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing.

Pincher has a majority of almost 20,000 in Tamworth and has been the town’s MP since 2010.
