JLR parent enjoys strong sales

JAGUAR Land Rover parent Tata Motors saw sales of its vehicles rise by 77% in January, boosted by a strong showing from the luxury British brands.

Sales of Jaguars and Land Rovers continued their upward trend with the two marques enjoying their best month yet since going on sale in India last June.

In all, Tata sold 65,478 vehicles during the month – including exports – a massive increase on the 36,391 sold in the corresponding month last year.

Domestically, sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for the month stood at 62,202, a 74% increase on January last year.

Sales of commercial vehicles were 35,957, the second highest ever and a 107% growth on the same month last year.

The growth in the number of low carbon vehicles was also encouraging with 20,255 vehicles sold – a massive 75% rise on January last year.

The passenger vehicles business as a whole, reported total sales of 28,547. This breaks down to 26,245 Tata and 2,302 Fiats vehicles, the latter reflecting the strength of Tata’s joint venture agreement with the Italian manufacturer.

The Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car, continued to prove popular with more than 4,000 vehicles sold during the month.

Tata cars as a whole enjoyed their best ever month in terms of sales, with the Indica and Indigo range also proving solid. The latter recorded sales of 7,258, the highest ever since the Indigo’s launch in 2002 and a growth of 83% over January last year.
