Business leader appointed at US university

A Black Country businessman has accepted a senior leadership position at George Washington University, after graduating from its prestigious Elliott School of International Affairs in 1999.

Carl Richardson, who jointly leads the Richardson family’s international business with his brothers Martyn and Lee, will co-chair the Executive Circle at George Washington University’s Institute for International Economic Policy (IIEP) with fellow alumnus Lisa Schroeter.

Schroeter currently holds the position of Global Director of Trade & Investment Policy at Dow, the global materials science business.

The Executive Circle offers strategic guidance to the University’s IIEP and also mentors and supports students in the Elliott School’s MA program in international economic policy.

Since 2021, the executive circle’s two dozen members from around the world have become trusted advisors to IIEP’s faculty director, as well as to Elliott School Dean Alyssa Ayres.

Through its philanthropy, the IIEP Executive Circle contributes to student employment at IIEP and student research with an emphasis on policy impact, with members supporting thought-leadership programs in business, development, climate, and trade policy.

Commenting on the appointments, Dean Ayres said: “I am delighted and excited that Lisa and Carl are the new chairs. Their inspiring leadership will help us to strengthen the IIEP Executive Circle and deepen connections across the GW and Elliott School global community – students, faculty, alumni, parents, and other school leadership groups.”

Carl Richardson said: “As a proud alumnus of the Elliott School of International Affairs, I am delighted to now serve as co-chair of the IIEP’s Executive Circle alongside Lisa Schroeter.

“Both Lisa and I will aim to use the positions to build synergies and create more international networking opportunities for the University, ultimately resulting in a greater overall impact.”

The executive circle kicks off the year with the “GW International Economic Policy Breakfast” in New York on September 26, featuring a high-powered panel of senior financial leaders.

Carl and Lisa replaced Deborah Lehr and Frank Wong as co-chairs of the Executive Circle.

Deborah Lehr is the executive director of the Paulson Institute, working closely with Hank Paulson, the former CEO and Chairman of Goldman Sachs and former United States Secretary of the Treasury. She was a senior managing director at the New York Stock Exchange and also served as senior advisor to the Chairman of Merill Lynch.

Based in Hong Kong, Frank Wong is the Asia President of Scholastic Inc., the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and educational materials.
