Contract for £22m redevelopment of leisure facility secured

The redevelopment of the swimming pools at Abbey Fields in Kenilworth is confirmed to commence by Warwick District Council, following the signing of a revised contract with the main developer.

Last summer, extensive medieval remains were discovered on the development site, prompting the halt of the programme.

In November 2023, the full council agreed upon a project ceiling cost and revised building plans were submitted to the main contractor, Kier.

The council has now approved a price of £22m with Kier, which falls below the overall cost ceiling and includes provisions for additional fees and contingencies.

Councillor Ian Davison, leader of Warwick District Council said: “I’m pleased that Cabinet and the leaders of all political parties agreed to continue with this exciting project, despite it being such a difficult decision given the high cost. We must thank our officers for their detailed scrutiny of the design and finances for us to reach an agreement with our contractor. The work can
now continue to provide Kenilworth and the wider district with the additional swimming pools required to meet the needs of a growing population. Once complete, this will be a wonderful asset for the whole community.”

Construction of Kenilworth’s new swimming facilities, including two pools with accessible provision, a sun deck, and a café, is expected to start in March, with an estimated completion date in summer 2026.
