Next phase of development starts on affordable housing scheme

A Coventry scheme is entering its fifth phase of redevelopment with 94 homes, 20 of which will be classed as affordable.

The Spirit Quarters development, located off Milverton Road on the Wood End estate, was completed in just over two years by Keepmoat aided by a £1m investment from WMCA in December 2021.

WMCA recently announced a £200m fund to construct over 12,000 homes on brownfield land in the region. Developers are encouraged to seek funding to build more high-quality homes, enhancing local communities in the region.

Wood End estate, in north Coventry, originally built in the late 1950s and early 1960s to house families from the inner city and the burgeoning car industry workforce, has undergone significant transformation.

The outdated homes were replaced, turning the estate into a vibrant community hub and creating numerous job opportunities throughout the project.

Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands and Chair of the WMCA, said: “What a transformation we are seeing at the former Wood End estate with old, outdated properties replaced with good quality, affordable homes for local people.

“It’s yet another example of our priority to create new communities and sustainable neighbourhoods on brownfield land. By using devolved funding from the government to clean up derelict industrial land or redevelop residential sites like Wood End, we are helping to create thousands of new homes and jobs. I look forward to seeing more people move into these wonderful new homes over the coming months, and watch this vibrant new community evolve.”
