Construction starts on 540-bed student scheme

Construction has started on a 540-bed student accommodation on Gough Street and Suffolk Street Queensway.

The 29-storey scheme was initially rejected because it was “too overbearing” but plans were revised and the scheme was approved in March last year.

The scheme design was amended to reorientate rooms in the taller portion of the building situated beside Queensgate House, to remove any potential overlooking issues between this proposal and the neighbouring site. Rooms are now positioned to look east and west via the gables.

Located east of the Grade B locally listed Christadelphian Hall and northwest of the Grade II-listed Birmingham Hebrew Congregation (Singers Hill Synagogue), the development site will include two connected BREEAM ‘Excellent’ buildings.

Developers MRP and Vita Group will offer a range of managed studios and students will have access to various amenities including a concierge, dining rooms, a gym, a social hub, a games area, study spaces, an outdoor terrace, and parking for 254 bicycles.
