Harvey Norman has opened the doors to its Merry Hill flagship store, marking its UK debut.

The global lifestyle, technology and home appliance retailer has taken 57,000 in the former Debenhams unit, creating 100 jobs. German gym group XF Gym is set to join the brand this month with its first UK site.

Founded in Australia, Harvey Norman now has over 300 stores in eight countries across the globe and is home to major brands including Samsung, Apple, Dyson, Smeg and Miele.

The store will offer luxury furniture as well as a cooking appliance centre specifically designed for Merry Hill shoppers, and in-store services such as click & collect and LoveTech, for technology set-up needs.

Harvey Norman was in “advanced discussions” in April to establish its UK headquarters in Sutton Coldfield as well as opening a store in The Gracechurch Centre.

Lachlan Roach, managing director of Harvey Norman UK, added: “With over 300 stores in eight countries across the globe, it will be no surprise that we have been wanting to make our entrance to the English market for a while. The opportunity we had to open in a key national destination like Merry Hill was not one to miss, and it makes for the perfect home for our flagship location.

“We’re a customer-centric brand, and Merry Hill has a vibrant community, so we are thrilled to bring both our extensive range of lifestyle, technology, and entertainment products and the exceptional service that Harvey Norman is renowned for worldwide.”

Jonathan Poole, centre manager at Merry Hill, said: “We’ve eagerly awaited the arrival of home, lifestyle and technology retailer, Harvey Norman. They truly offer something for everyone, bringing a wide range of homewares, furniture and appliances in an exceptional store environment for our visitors to enjoy.

“The opening of this retail giant comes at an exciting time for the centre, and it takes Merry Hill to the next level as we continue to evolve, so our visitors can enjoy everything they need under one roof, alongside a destination for eating, drinking and relaxing.

“The Harvey Norman team has got some exciting plans for the new store in the coming months, which we hope to share soon.”

Other brands also investing in Merry Hill at this time include British performance sportswear brand Castore, which opened its doors on Thursday 3rd October, Pandora, which unveiled a transformation in September, and Waterstones, that has seen its two-floor bookshop undergo change.
