Plans underway to unlock £100m for environmental projects

Plans are underway to unlock up to £100m in funding from both private and public sectors for environmental projects across the West Midlands.

The initiative aims to accelerate nature recovery, improve public health and wellbeing and protect communities from climate change.

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has already pinpointed 200 potential projects spanning 46,000 hectares.

Proposed initiatives include habitat restoration, climate resilience projects, improved access to green spaces, species protection and boosting biodiversity.

By developing a pipeline of ready-to-invest projects, WMCA aims to attract funders to support innovative and impactful environmental initiatives.

It is expected to help developers meet new planning rules requiring a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)—ensuring more or higher-quality natural habitats post-development.

At the first West Midlands Natural Environment Summit, Mayor Richard Parker introduced support measures to prepare initial projects for investment, with a full investment prospectus anticipated next year.

The summit brought together over 100 stakeholders, including the Government’s nature minister and Coventry MP, Mary Creagh.

Parker said: “My focus is on securing new funding that will directly support nature projects, improving the quality of life for people across our region.

“We’re aiming to bring in private sector investment to create more green spaces, restore habitats, and plant thousands of trees, especially in areas that need them most. These initiatives will help make our communities greener, healthier, and more vibrant, ensuring the benefits are felt now and for future generations.”

Dr Delia Garratt, chief executive at Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust, said: “If we are going to address the profound challenges we face around the ecological and climate crisis, society as a whole has to come together to work constructively towards solutions.

“The private sector can make an important contribution towards securing a better future for people and wildlife. We are excited by the Local Investment in Natural Capital initiative, as it will create new opportunities for long-term funding, funding which offers a really positive impact for nature’s recovery.”
