Amended plans lodged for 300-bed PBSA
Sama Investments has submitted a revised planning application for a 301-bed student scheme as part of a phased redevelopment of The Arcadian Centre.
The development at the former Goods Yard on Pershore Street would deliver 301 student beds across a stepped building of four storeys, 10 storeys and 15 storeys.
Changes include an increase in PBSA beds from 238 to 301, alongside an extension of the site to the corner of Cathay Street to create “a genuine gateway to the Arcadian” to also facilitate the redevelopment of the site opposite in the future.
The gateway would also have an immediate relationship with the future redevelopment of Birmingham Indoor Market diagonally opposite. LCP, the owner of the Arcadian, is supportive of this approach to the development, according to planning documents.
Features of Pershore Street include a social lounge, TV room, gym and workspaces, as well as 64 cycle spaces and a green roof area on level four of the building.
Sama founder Bilal Ahmed said: “Our proposals for Pershore Street will transform this vacant brownfield site to deliver a flagship scheme that will bring much-needed student accommodation to the city, while also supporting the wider growth of the area.
“This would be a great addition for the 183,000 students in Birmingham, providing much-needed, high-quality living space in the vibrant Chinese Quarter. Alongside supporting the continued growth of our educational institutions, the proposals for Pershore Street will help to unlock rental properties for other residents in the city.”
