The third building at the Arena Central scheme in Birmingham has been tipped for approval by planning officers.

Kier Property lodged revised plans for the 5 Centenary Square scheme after its previous planning permission expired. The developer is seeking approval for 280,863 sq ft of Grade A office space opposite the Library and next to The University of Birmingham’s Exchange Building.

The ten-storey building would feature a top-floor terrace overlooking Centenary Square, alongside a basement with 12 car parking spaces and a cycle hub with 160 spaces and changing rooms.

It’s been recommended for approval, subject to a section 106 agreement that involves a £2.2m financial contribution for active travel connections between public transport.

The revised plans by Make Architects have relocated the cycle hub to the lower ground floor, in order for the hub to be accessed from Bridge Street.

A unit for retail has also been added on the lower ground floor off Bank Court, as well as a reconfiguration of the reception to accommodate access to both the lower ground cycle facilities and the central bank of lifts facing onto Bank Court.

Planning documents say around 1,385 people could work at the site once complete.

Kier bought the 526,000 sq ft development site, along with 4 and 5 Arena Central, in a £30m deal in February 2019, replacing Miller as the developer.

Birmingham City Council’s planning committee will meet to discuss the scheme on Nov 28.
