Speller brothers build on family legacy

Adrian Speller

Midlands building contractor, Speller Metcalfe, has appointed a new joint managing director as part of its leadership transition.

Adrian Speller will join his younger brother James Speller, who stepped into the managing director role in 2022.

Writing on LinkedIn, he said: “Supported by our talented staff, I’m very proud to be leading Speller Metcalfe with James Speller. After working on construction sites from an illegal young age, I have been a tea maker, labourer, site manager and environmental manager before becoming a Director in 2014. I look forward to continuing to drive positive evolution in our industry, delivering some truly excellent buildings along the way.

“Importantly, I keep in mind that you can learn from everyone that you encounter – keep an open mind and be inclusive of all who contribute to creating our built environment; from Coalface to Client.”

Adrian Speller, who has served as the firm’s technical director for several years, steps into his new role following the retirement of both co-founders, his father Steve Speller and Andy Metcalfe.

Steve Speller, who co-founded the Worcestershire-based business with Andy Metcalfe in 1995, retired in 2022.

Metcalfe followed suit last October, stepping down after nearly 30 years with the company, prompting further leadership transitions.

The pair, both quantity surveyors, started the firm in Speller’s garage, driven by a desire to “do things better” based on their own industry experiences.
