New plans for multi-million pound regen of Black Country town

A NEW housing estate is set to be built next to a proposed leisure complex in a multi-million bid to regenerate part of a Black Country town.

Solihull-based Mar City Developments is looking to build 142 homes on a vacant site at Alexandra Road in Tipton after signing a deal with landowner Sandwell Council.

Site preparation is already under way with actual building works set to begin in the middle of next year.

It will sit next to a planned £8.1m swimming and leisure complex containing a 25m pool, dance studio and gym alongside a mini park.

Work is due to start on the leisure centre early next year and be open in spring 2013.

Council cabinet member Cllr Mahboob Hussain said: “This is a good day for Sandwell in general and for Tipton in particular.

“It means a large piece of land right next to the new pool will come back into use, providing new homes and an attractive setting.”
