Telford’s Sutton Hill gets new community hub as demolition starts
Demolition works have started at Severn Walk in Sutton Hill, paving the way for a new community centre on the existing Hub on the Hill site.
The project, managed by Telford & Wrekin Council in partnership with Madeley Town Council, involves knocking down an empty building at the rear of the current hub that has fallen into disrepair and attracted anti-social behaviour. Overnight security is in place during the demolition, with a temporary reduction of six car parking spaces in the surrounding area while works continue.
The new hub, planned for 103 Southgate, will include a central atrium for events, a cafe, a larger hall for sports and leisure activities, a community library and a youth and education room, alongside a proposed first-floor neighbourhood health hub offering health checks, mobile screening, vaccinations and outpatient appointments. Improved outside space, including a possible outdoor gym and community garden, is also planned. A resident consultation event is planned for October.
Councillor Lee Carter, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said the project aims to create a new focal point for Sutton Hill, providing services to help local people improve their health, gain qualifications and get a job.
The work forms part of the council’s wider regeneration efforts across Sutton Hill, Brookside and Woodside, which includes the government-funded Pride in Place programme. Woodside was selected as one of the first areas nationally to take part in the scheme, with the council extending funding to expand the investment into Brookside and Sutton Hill.
