£2.6m scheme eases Wolverhampton congestion

WORK on a £2.6m scheme to ease traffic congestion at a key junction into Wolverhampton has begun.

The scheme, at the junction of the A449 Stafford Road and M54 Junction 2 roundabout, close to the city’s northern gateway, will increase capacity by adding a third lane to the motorway exit slip road.

New traffic signals will be introduced to help smooth out traffic flows. Pedestrian and cyclist safety will also benefit from the introduction of signalised crossing points on the island.

Of the costings, £1.6m is coming from the Government’s fiscal stimulus package.

The work is needed in advance of new projects that will regenerate the area to the north of the city such as i54.

Tim Harbot, Highways Agency Regional Director, said: “This roundabout has experienced a higher than average level of incidents for this type of junction so we are taking these steps to make it safer.

“To keep delays to a minimum, we are carrying out the works overnight and during off-peak periods during the day.”

The project is likely to be completed by the end of June and motorists have been advised to expect delays until then.

The work is being carried out on behalf of the Highways Agency by Amey and the contractors and specialists from the Contract Management Framework and the Midlands Works Framework.
