New restaurant for business district

AN INDIAN restaurant group has launched its third outlet in the heart of Birmingham’s business district. Saffron already runs restaurants in Worcester and Oldbury but it has now opened a new site at 126 Colmore Row, in the unit formerly occupied by Caffè Uno. Saffron has taken an undisclosed lease on the 2,690 sq ft ground floor which has a 60-seat capacity. It will be led by chef Sudha Saha and serve contemporary Indian dishes with lunch, pre-theatre, a la Carte and five-course tasting menus which will change quarterly. The company is jointly owned by managing director Aklasul Momin, Limon Rahman and Mr Saha and this new outlet has created 12 jobs. Mr Momin said: “We already have two successful neighbourhood restaurants and felt the time is right to expand to the heart of Birmingham with our style of Indian fine dining.”

National culinary award

KHALID Sami Khan, chef with Indian restaurant Lasan in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, has been named British Culinary Chef of the Year at the British Curry Awards. Mr Khan secured the title, introduced for the first time this year, after cooking a two-course dinner for the judging panel which included Derek Dyson, executive producer at ITN, and Steve Myall from the Daily Mirror. The award follows Mr Khan’s colleague in the Lasan kitchen, Muraliraj Narashimaraj, winning the UK South Asian Chef competition in October.

Openings at The Cube

MARCO Pierre White’s new 300-seat restaurant at The Cube in Birmingham opened yesterday alongside the building’s new hotel and champagne bar. The £13m site has taken over the top three floors of the 25-storey building and the launch marks the completion of a 26-week build programme. The opening follows the launch of celebrity hairdresser Adee Phelan’s salon in September at The Cube.
