Bombardier in jobs push, despite redundancies

TRAIN maker Bombardier has started recruiting again – despite the fact that it is currently in the process of shedding 1,400 workers at its Derby site.

This somewhat contradictory stance is a result of the firm recently winning a £18m contract to build 130 Electrostar carriages for Southern Railway.

Some 50 jobs are being advertised on its website, ranging from engineers to project managers. In its advert, the company says: “As part of this team, you will be responsible for engineering the entire rolling stock lifecycle – from inception to decommissioning, including manufacture and testing at our Derby facility.”

Bombardier announced in July it was shedding 1,400 jobs in the city after missing out on the £1.4bn Thameslink contract. Controversially the contract was given to a rival bid from a group led by Germany’s Siemens.

It is understood that a review of Bombardier’s UK’s operations is ongoing. Local reports suggests that the future of the firm’s Litchurch Lane site in Derby rests on the company bringing in new work that could tide the factory over until the next major government contract comes along.

Bombardier is in the running for the eVoyager government contract, estimated to be worth around £127m. This involves converting a fleet of 35 existing diesel Cross Country Voyager trains to hybrid electric power.
