Skills for Growth Forum appoints new chair and vice-chair

THE East and West Midlands Skills for Growth Forum has appointed a new chairman and vice-chairman.
Mike Johnson, group training manager for Lincolnshire-based construction company, the Gelder Group, is the new chairman, while Jeremy Lydiatt, regional training manager for Mansell Construction Services Western Region, is his deputy.
The two men bring with them a wealth of expertise and have been tasked with raising skills levels and encouraging growth within the local construction sector.
In addition to his new role, Mr Johnson sits on the Lincolnshire and Rutland Employment and Skills Board and is also an ambassador for the National Apprenticeship Service.
He said: “My core purpose is to work alongside local organisations in the Midlands to create long term prospects for young people in our industry and encourage the existing workforce to up-skill with NVQs and other vocational studies.”
Mr Lydiatt, left, is also employer representative on WHG skills employers forum, committee member of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Constructing Excellence Club, and West Midlands National Apprenticeship Service Ambassador.
He said: “Stimulating employment opportunities, widening apprenticeship frameworks and upskilling will be key in preparing the Midlands for the journey ahead. Clearly identified training priorities will produce an adaptable and proficient workforce, capable of navigating the forthcoming challenges.”
Amanda Sergeant, sector strategy manager for CITB – Construction Skills in the Midlands, said: “The forum plays an integral part in helping shape the future direction of training and support for the industry in order to deliver the right skills for economic growth locally and nationally.”
“So, it’s imperative that we have the right people involved. I am delighted that two such highly respected and dedicated individuals have decided to take the helm.”
The forum meets three times a year to assess the current and future skills priorities for the construction industry in the Midlands.
