New age dawns for innovative Millennium Point

MILLENNIUM Point – the ‘O2 of Birmingham’ – is preparing for a whole new lease of life as it enters its second decade.
The home of the Think Tank science museum and one of the biggest digital 3D screens in the country, Millennium Point has just appointed a new chief executive and is looking forward to being the centrepiece of a rapidly developing Eastside quarter – with the ‘fairy dust’ of HS2 already starting to have an effect on the area.
The new boss is Philip Singleton, who as deputy director of regeneration in Birmingham until 2008 had a hand in drawing up plans to make the previously neglected Eastside area fit for the 21st century. Millennium Point was the cornerstone of that revival, and now Mr Singleton is at the helm of the sprawling centre.
As part of a mission to reacquaint people with the fact the Millennium Point is a “big toybox with fantastic toys inside it”, the venue is sponsoring the Innovator of the Year category in TheBusinessDesk.com’s inaugural Midlands Business Masters awards.
Mr Singleton said: “Millennium Point will be bigger, better and a whole lot more interesting. We’re situated right in the middle of an amazing area. Universities are expanding all around us, the new park opens soon, and the high speed rail link will bring Canary Wharf to within 65 minutes of our front door.
“Millennium Point is an exemplary showcase of science technology and learning.”
It is already home to Birmingham City University’s faculty of technology and engineering, its school of acting as well as the newly renamed Giant Screen’ and the Think Tank.
Mr Singleton said: “Millennium Point has remarkable spaces and facilities to showcase all kinds of events and launches. We see a great future that uses all of these to provide a unique facility such as international product launches of video games that use the Giant Screen as well as the massive vertical space in the atrium.”
The Business Masters Awards – in association with Jaguar – take place on Thursday May 10 at Birmingham Town Hall. To book tickets, click here.
