Dunlop Motorsport celebrates Birmingham manufacturing links

BIRMINGHAM-based racing tyre manufacturer Dunlop Motorsport is celebrating its longstanding links with the city at the Birmingham Made Me Design EXPO.
Dunlop Motorsport has taken a prime spot at the entrance to The Mailbox to showcase its products, which include a special race tyre commissioned for the event made at its factory in Erdington.
The firm has also teamed up with independent retailer Urban Coffee Company to create a pop-up version of Café Dunlop, which tours race events throughout the year.
Kate Rock, PR Manager Dunlop UK, said: “The technology that goes into tyre making doesn’t usually get as much limelight as the cars or the drivers, but they really can make or break a race. We have been manufacturing in the city since 1917, which is why we are proud to be showcasing our work at Birmingham Made Me.
“As well as being at the vanguard of technical innovation, we are also a commercial success story – supplying over 250,000 tyres each year to over 500 different racing teams across more than 30 different championships worldwide from our Birmingham centre of excellence.”
The firm has supplied tyres for the teams at the Le Mans 24 Hour race and the Isle of Man TT 2012, securing 12 podium places out of a possible 12, winning every race and setting a new race record in the TT Superbike race.
“Most importantly the race proven technology that is developed in our Birmingham centre of excellence, where all of our motorsport tyres are designed and handmade, is transferred to road tyres such as SportSmart and GP Racer D211 on two wheels and the Dunlop SportMaxx RT and Dunlop SP FastResponse on four wheels,” added Ms Rock.
The Expo event is a celebration of Birmingham’s manufacturing industry and features displays by some of the area’s leading companies.
