CIPP boss crowned Solihull business person of the year

LINDSAY Melvin has emerged as this year’s Solihull ‘Business Person of the Year’ in the Chamber’s annual employee awards.

Melvin is the chief executive officer of the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) and has scooped the award after managing to reverse the decline in membership numbers that the organisation has experienced.

He has done this by forging strategic alliances with other membership organisations, but has also introduced a number of other measures to improve standards at CIPP.

Winners of the Members Employee Awards were Terry Groom of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions (customer care category), Ian Jeffery of Prime Chartered Accountants (career advancement), Clare Egan of Solihull College (professional development); and Charlie Maunder of Village Hotel (outstanding employee).

The latter won his award due to his ‘going above and beyond’ the call of duty approach to keep customers satisfied.

Egan was commended for her efforts in rising up the career ladder – she began at Solihull College in 1999 as a finance administrator but today handles contracts worth £3m.

Jeffery was nominated because of his ‘outstanding drive, determination and motivation’ and Groom for his rapid progression from inexperienced new starter to key account manager.

Jane Jackson, director of Solihull Chamber of Commerce, said: “2012 has seen an unprecedented number of entries from a wide range of sectors and judging has been very difficult.”
