Greentech firm McCamley recognised for wind turbine work

STAFFORDSHIRE green tech firm McCamley UK has been recognised for its pioneering work into wind turbines.

The firm, based at Keele University Science and Business Park, picked up a top award at Newcastle under Lyme’s Business Boost Awards. The awards recognise SMEs which have striven to achieve success.

McCamley won the Judges Special Award for most innovative business and was presented with £1,000 to invest back into the business.

McCamley UK Ltd picked up the award for its vertical axis wind turbine which generates electricity in urban areas and is set to potentially revolutionise the renewables industry. The new design has been installed for the first time at KUSBP and is able to cope with the turbulent and variable nature of the gusting wind conditions often found in urban environments.

In addition, McCamley UK Ltd has also been shortlisted alongside Keele University for a Lord Stafford Award which recognises the development of collaborative relationships between businesses and universities.

The sector-leading partnership has been shortlisted in the ‘Innovation for Environmental Sustainability’ category for its advances in wind power. Keele University has already received national and international recognition for its work in the wind power industry, working with the Ministry of Defence to provide expert insight into the impact of wind turbine vibrations on nuclear detection sites.

This latest collaboration will see university students and academics working with McCamley UK Ltd to assess the performance of the prototype urban wind turbine over the coming months and working towards microgeneration accreditation.

Dr Scott Elliott, CEO of McCamley UK Ltd, said: “The past year has been an incredibly exciting one for the business and we are delighted to have picked up a Business Boost Award in recognition of this.

“Our location at Keele University Business and Science Park has led to a real partnership where we have been able to work with academics to turn our expertise into commercial reality and it is great that this has been acknowledged with a Lord Stafford Award nomination.”

McCamley UK Ltd has also recently moved into Keele University Science and Business Park’s Nova Centre, a converted farmhouse offering specially refurbished office space for fledgling businesses on a dedicated two-year enterprise programme.

Caroline Mairs, head of Keele Science and Business Park, said: “An important part of our role at Keele University, particularly through the Nova Centre programme, is to support and help the region’s business continue to grow in their industries by maximising knowledge transfer between the institution, academics and companies.

“We are incredibly pleased that McCamley’s innovative work has culminated in awards success and look forward to continuing to work closely with the business to help it achieve sustained growth.”
