Eversheds picks up top prize at Law Society awards

EVERSHEDS has been named Law Firm of the Year (16 partners or more) at the Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards.

The Colmore Row-based firm picked up the award after beating off competition from Gateley, Irwin Mitchell, Mills & Reeve and SGH Martineau.

In the Law Firm of the Year (five to 15 partners) and Law Firm of the Year (sole practitioner to four partners) categories there were awards for Sydney Mitchell and Jayne Willetts & Co Solicitors respectively.

Eversheds has operated in Birmingham for nearly 100 years. In 2012 the firm advised on a number of high profile projects, including the redevelopment of New Street station, the West Coast franchise and Birmingham Airport runway extension. It also acted on the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust public enquiry.

In the individual categories, Olwen Dutton of Bevan Brittan won Partner of the Year, while Clive Garner, partner at Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, won International Lawyer of the Year.

Mary Kaye, president of Birmingham Law Society, said: “There was strong competition in all of the categories this year, which made the judging panel’s job of picking the winners all the more difficult.

“In what remains a challenging legal market, with the industry going through unprecedented change, it’s encouraging to see that Birmingham and the West Midlands remains a centre of legal excellence, as demonstrated by this year’s winners.”

The Legal Awards were held at The ICC in Birmingham, with more than 500 people from the region’s legal and business community attending.
