Aerospace sector boosted by Rolls-Royce order

THE West Midlands aerospace sector has received another boost from Rolls-Royce after the engine maker announced a major order.

The Derby company, fresh from announcing a 4% increase in interim profits and £1.07bn of new orders, said airline Cathay Pacific had selected the Trent XWB to power 30 of its Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

The aircraft will begin to enter service in 2016.

The Trent XWB engine represents a significant advance in technology as it will reduce the overall environmental impact of operators, at the same time as it delivers superior operating performance.

Cathay Pacific and Rolls-Royce have a long and established record of cooperation. The airline was the launch customer of the Trent engine family and operates a fleet that includes Trent 700 and Trent 800 engines.

Mark King, President, Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace said: “The Trent XWB is the fastest selling and most environmentally efficient Trent engine ever. We are delighted that Cathay Pacific has again selected Rolls-Royce technology to power their new fleet and combined this with our TotalCare support package.”

Tony Tyler, Chief Executive Officer, Cathay Pacific said the engine selection was the perfect fit for the airline’s future development where the A350-900 will replace older aircraft and help it grow the fleet.

“The new technology of the Trent XWB will also help us meet the significant operational and environmental goals we have set for the future,” he said.

The engine maker supports thousands of jobs in the regional aerospace sector supply chain.
