Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market opens today

BIRMINGHAM’s famous Frankfurt Christmas Market opens today with organisers promising that it will be bigger and better than ever.

The 13-year-old market, which attracts more than four million visitors to the city, will this year have 190 stalls selling food and drink, craft items and gifts.

Centred around Victoria Square, it will stretch down New Street to the Bullring and up through Chamberlain Square to Centenary Square and towards the International Convention Centre (ICC), outside of which the Birmingham Wheel is up and operational once more.

The Frankfurt Christmas Market and adjoining craft market is said by the city council to be the biggest authentic German market in the world, outside of Germany and Austria. It earns £90m for the city.

Many locals see its opening as signifying the start of the festive period.

The market will run until Sunday 22 December.
