Solihull College sets up new pre-medical school

THE burgeoning medical sector in the West Midlands has been supported by the opening of a new facility at Solihull’s Sixth Form College.

The college has opened a Pre-Medical School for students intent on forging medical careers. The new school will help to train the students and support their ambitions with visits to universities, hospitals and museums. It will also host masterclasses and talks from visiting speakers.

So far 15 students at the college have enrolled at the school and they were inducted during an event at Solihull Hospital, where they were introduced to the Heart of England Healthcare Trust, which is supporting this programme.

The programme is also being supported by several universities, including Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester and Keele Universities.

Trevor Irving, Assistant Principal at the college and in charge of the programme, said: “We believe this programme will prove incredibly beneficial to those students, who are putting themselves forward for incredibly competitive careers. Getting offers at university to study medicine is very difficult and a commitment to a programme like this will not only boost their confidence, but show admissions officers their dedication and drive.”

Two more events are planned before the end of term as part of what is a comprehensive programme; there will be a speaker from Leicester University who will deliver an ethics lecture and to help set up an e-mentoring scheme, and some Christmas lectures at University of Birmingham Medical School.
