Lifestyle: Warwickshire cricketers ensure they have 20:20 vision for new season

WARWICKSHIRE’S cricketers will have no excuse for missing the ball in the new season’s T20 tournament after being assessed, appropriately, for 20:20 vision.

All the players received a check-up from opticians at Birmingham-based Scrivens, which is the Edgbaston club’s official eye care partner.

All the players were checked out when they visited Scrivens’ new-look branch in Corporation Street. To make sure there will be no confusion over their running between the wickets, all the players also received hearing tests.

Optometrist Wazim Sarwar also made sure they kept an eye on the competition by giving them some additional dietary tips to keep their eyes match fit.

He said: “We all know about eating carrots to see in the dark, but there is growing evidence that a healthy diet can help achieve optimum vision, which is obviously critical to a cricket player’s success. Many people don’t realise that the same foods that are good for their heart and arteries are also beneficial for their eyesight.

“Foods such as spinach, kale and broccoli, which contain lutein and zeaxanthin, have been known to help reduce the risk of cataracts. Lutein helps to protect the eyes by forming pigments in the macula, which in turn filter out harmful wavelengths that can damage the eye.  Likewise, vitamins C, E and zinc have been known to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.”

This will be the second season that family-owned Scrivens has been one of Warwickshire’s sponsors.

Gareth Roberts, Commercial Director, Warwickshire CCC, said: “It’s great to have a local company such as Scrivens supporting the club. They are not only a proactive partner but also bring optical and hearing care expertise that will make sure our players are fully match fit for the new season.”

Scrivens operates 171 stores across the UK having recently added a further 19 branches from Rayner Opticians.
