Shares flat on inflation update

END-OF-DAY REPORT: Headline shares ended a directionless session flat, as investors mulled the latest UK inflation readings, with weakness in retail offsetting broker-inspired gains elsewhere, with little company news to inspire.

At the close of business, the FTSE100 was up just 1.88 points at 5,567.41 with the FTSE250 off 35.89 points at 10,472.44 and the FTSE Smallcaps 7.74 points lower at 2,909.13.

NEW YORK

US stocks were modestly higher in late morning trade after better-than-expected August retail sales data.

LONDON MARKETS

Trade was cautious with disappointing UK inflation data sending the bulls to cover and no corporate news of consequence to bring them out.

All of the major sectors showed mixed, with much of the major stock price movement dictated by broker comment.
