New era for Birmingham Airport as first China flight lands

THE first flight from China to Birmingham touched down this morning.

The 248-seat A330-200 aircraft operated by China Southern Airways is flying between Beijing and Birmingham on three dates up to 6 August.

It has been made possible by Birmingham Airport’s £40m runway extension which now allows it to operate direct flights to China and other long-haul destinations – such as the west coast of America.

Birmingham Airport is the first UK airport outside London to offer direct charter flights to China.

Airport authorities hope it will mean an influx of Chinese tourists travelling to the Midlands for easy access to attractions such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Bicester Village and the Cotswolds.
