Eye hospital invests £250,000 to improve diagnostic and surgery services

TWO private hospitals in the West Midlands are investing £250,000 to improve patient services and expand their consulting teams.

Spire Eye Centre, which operates at Spire Little Aston Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Spire South Bank Hospital in Worcester have acquired two pieces of equipment that bring the latest technologies and medical procedures to the region.

They will be able to use the equipment to conduct more accurate diagnoses, as well as perform laser refractive eye surgery and clear lens surgery – procedures that reduce the need for glasses.

The hospitals took the decision to invest because of increasing demand for specialist eye services.

The move has been supported by the appointment of two new consultants; bringing the specialist team up to 10 people.

Joining the specialist eye team is Dan Calladine, who is a corneal specialist and performs laser refractive eye surgery.  He will work across both hospitals alongside Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Monique Hope Ross, who carries out clear lens surgery. This effectively replaces the natural lens of the eye with an artificial one.

Aidan Murray has also joined the team at Spire Little Aston Hospital as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon focusing upon the cosmetic treatment of eyelid disease as well as the treatment of thyroid eye disease and watery eye.

Ms Hope-Ross, who was involved in establishing the centre in 2009, said: “Advancements in the treatment of eye disease have grown exponentially over the past decade and we are now able to treat many more conditions and preserve sight for a growing number of patients.

“To do this, we need to continually invest in both medical technology and consultant expertise.  The new scanners and laser equipment will enable patients at Spire Eye Centre to benefit from leading technology in both the diagnostic process and treatment.”
