FTSE tipped to open modestly higher on rising commodities

PRE-OPEN REPORT: Headline shares are tipped to open 16 to 21 points higher today, according to financial websites, with commodity stocks a likely focus as metals and oil prices rise overnight.

In the US last night, the Dow lost 47 points at 10,788, the Nasdaq Composite fell 8 points at 2,369 and the S&P500 shed 4 points at 1,141.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was last up 56 points at 9,425, while the Hong Kong markets are closed for a public holiday.

Crude oil traded at $80.35 a barrel on Nymex and gold settled at $1,310 an ounce.

A very thin corporate diary today lists only final results from Helphire Group.

Accident Exchange Group, European Nickel, Kiotech International and Volex are hosting their AGMs.
