Yolk’s on Cadbury as ‘Egg-gate’ row erupts

BIRMINGHAM confectioner Cadbury has come under fire after a recipe change to one of its most popular products provoked an outcry from consumers.

The Bournville confectioner has changed the shell of its Crème Egg to standard Cadbury’s chocolate rather than the traditional Dairy Milk variety.

However, the company – operated by Mondelez International, the snacks division of Kraft Foods – has been inundated with complaints from people saying the taste just isn’t the same.

There has even been an online petition started demanding that the firm’s US owners change the recipe back.

It is the latest chocolate controversy to hit the firm and comes just months after a similar outcry after it revealed it would not be producing chocolate coins for the Christmas market.

A Mondelez International spokesman said: “The fundamentals of the Cadbury Crème Egg remain exactly the same – delicious milk chocolate and the unique crème centre that consumers love.

“We have always used a range of milk chocolate blends for different products, depending on their shape or consistency. Cadbury Crème Egg now uses a standard, traditional Cadbury milk chocolate for its shell.”
