College targets SMEs as it looks to grow apprenticeship take up

WALSALL College has called on SMEs in the area to consider taking on young apprentices in order to benefit from a number of apprenticeship grants.

The Apprenticeships Grant for Employers (AGE) is a government initiative available to businesses with less than 50 employees, and comprises a payment of £1,500 to help with the cost of an extra employee aged between 16 and 24. Firms can apply for the grant for up to five apprentices at any level.

In addition, the college said businesses could also take advantage of Walsall Works, a multi-million pound investment by Walsall Council which aims to tackle youth employment in the borough by providing incentives of up to £6,000 for employers which take on young apprentices. Launched in 2012, the project has already helped thousands of employers to grow their business.

The college said it was offering a full range of apprenticeships to employers of all sizes and could support employers in the recruitment and assessment of apprentices, thereby saving firms money in recruitment fees.

James Norris, Assistant Principal for Commercial Development at Walsall College, said: “Apprenticeships provide young people with the opportunity to gain valuable skills and real work experience that will lead to greater employment prospects in the future, and are also a fantastic way for businesses to develop new talent and pass their knowledge on to the next generation of workers.

“We are actively looking to speak to those interested in taking advantage of these grants. Walsall College is committed to delivering high quality apprenticeships and work-based NVQs that will support companies, helping them achieve success now and in the future.”
