BBC begins recruiting 100 new roles for Birmingham

THE BBC has begun recruiting more than 100 people for positions at its new HR Service Centre, based in The Mailbox in Birmingham.

The jobs vary from HR administrators, HR Systems Advisors and Team Leaders. Applications for the positions will run until September with start dates phased in over the next six months.

The Corporation has come under fire for its lack of support for the region; with its focus split between London and Manchester.

The new positions are seen as a token gesture by the BBC as none of the roles will be directly associated with broadcast production.

Six assessment events are planned to be held at The Mailbox this summer to find candidates for the new roles.

Joe Godwin, Director, BBC Birmingham and BBC Academy said: “We have said that we would invest more in the city, so I’m very pleased to announce that we’re advertising for over 100 jobs based at the Mailbox – at varying levels – which local people can apply for this summer.

“In difficult economic circumstances we’re investing around double in the Midlands compared to two years ago – over £125m by the end of this financial year.”

BBC Birmingham is based across three sites, the Mailbox, the Drama Village in Selly Oak and the Digital Innovation Unit in Fazeley. The HR Service Centre will be based in the Mailbox and will serve the whole of the BBC.

To apply for the roles, prospective candidates have been told to visit the BBC’s careers website so they can register their interest and receive alerts, as well as applying for jobs that are already advertised.

The Mailbox is also home to BBC WM, Midlands Today and the BBC Academy, the BBC’s the centre for skills and training.

The BBC’s output from Birmingham is confined to The Archers and Home Front on Radio 4, BBC Asian Network and several specialist music programmes from Radio 2 including The Organist Entertains and Listen to the Band.

Drama Village output includes productions such as daytime serials Father Brown, Doctors (which celebrates its 3,000th episode later this year) and WPC 56. Its latest drama commission, The Coroner, will be broadcast on BBC One next year.
