Firm fined after workers injured when lowering cable

AN electrical services company has been fined after three workers were injured during refurbishment work at a building on Five Ways Island in Birmingham.
Birmingham Magistrates’ Court heard the three employees working for Cannock Electrical Services Limited of Staffordshire were fitting a 95mm thick electrical cable from the 20th floor to the basement of the building. The workers were lowering the cable by hand when it slipped, whipping round and striking them.
One worker suffered a badly broken leg, the second a fractured ankle and the third minor injuries.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the incident, which occurred on 13 February 2015 at Prominent Building, Hagley Road, found that there was poor planning and supervision of the task and the method of working was unsafe.
Cannock Electrical Services Limited, of Progress Business Centre, Brookfield Drive, Cannock, was fined a total of £13,000 and ordered to pay costs of £587 and a victim surcharge of £120 after pleading guilty to an offence under Regulation 13(2) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.
