Hotel group to spend £4.5m on new Birmingham city centre site

BUDGET hotel group, easyHotel has unveiled details of a £4.5m scheme to open its first facility in Birmingham.
The company has taken a 125-year leasehold on 81-91 John Bright Street which it intends to convert into an 84-bedroom hotel.
The purchase of the property is subject to easyHotel obtaining planning consent for a hotel.
The deal is further evidence of the burgeoning hospitality sector in Birmingham and is the latest in a string of new hotel announcements for the city.
The company is thought to have been attracted by the building’s location which is not only close to New Street Station but just minutes away from the new Grand Central shopping centre.
If everything goes to schedule then the facility could be open in 2017.
Commenting on the announcement, Guy Parsons, Chief Executive Officer, easyHotel said: “We are delighted to be investing in the UK’s second largest city. Along with its six universities and internationally reputed arts scene, Birmingham is also the UK’s fourth largest tourist destination, with 34 million visitors in 2014.
“We see significant opportunity for easyHotel to service business customers and leisure visitors to Birmingham’s lively events programmes and look forward to building our brand presence in the city.
“In line with the strategy, the current financial year to date has seen an acceleration in both the owned and franchised hotel development pipelines as the company continues to establish itself as the leading branded super budget chain.”
